Before we begin...a little background on events leading up to this.

May 21, 2008
At 2:07 PM, Christy received an e-mail from Gladney (our adoption agency) indicating that there was a potential situation in the works. Before taking her next breath, she granted permission for our profile to be included in the large stack being sent to the birth parents. At this point, expectations were low and life continued as usual.

While vacationing with the Weis/Bokelman family at their swanky Myrtle Beach palace by the sea, we received word that the birth parents had down-selected such that only 3 adoptive families remained....we were one of them. Excitement and anxiety over the thought that we might actually get a baby sometime soon was beginning to consume us.

June 2, 2008 -- Let the story unfold
I returned home from work early, for no particular reason. I entered the house and searched for Christy and Nicholas, but they were not home. Like any concerned husband, I checked my e-mail before looking for my family any further. There was an e-mail in my inbox from our adoption agency. I read it carefully and then set out to find Christy.

I opened the front door and looked across the street to the neighbor's house. Just over the fence in their backyard, I sighted this large orange inflatable water park monstrocity (I think that is actually what the label on the box says). I quickly determined that wife and child were over testing it out. So I wandered over, and sure enough, there they were. Christy and our neighbor Amber chatting (about the potential adoption situation) in the shade while several neighborhood kids took turns climbing up and sliding/tumbling/pummeling each other on the way down to the bottom.

After a few minutes of pleasantries and gratuitous small talk (offense intended to Amber), I mentioned to Christy that there was an e-mail in which she might be interested. They both immediately stopped talking (which rarely happens) and waited for me to tell them one way or the other as to whether the birth parents had selected us. It was at this point that I told them.....the e-mail had nothing to do with that situation they were discussing.

This e-mail had to do with another situation...a birth mother in Austin who was expecting twins. After a brief discussion and a muffled scream, Christy ran back to our house to read the e-mail and get on the phone with our Gladney case worker (Sara).

While on the phone, Christy got a few more details about the new situation. First of all, the twin/gender breakdown (medical term) was one boy and one girl. The other interesting piece of information was that the same Gladney case worker (Kathy) was assigned to this case as was assigned to Nicholas' case back in 2005!

NOTE: The adoption agency assigns a case worker to each birth mother. The case worker looks out for the well being of the birth mom and counsels them through the entire process.

The situation also seemed to have other similarities to Nicholas' case...both birth parents involved along with a supportive family. At this point, it was easy for Christy to tell Gladney that YES, they could send our profile.
